Doom Roguelike Analysis: Angel of Purity Dual Challenges (0.9.9.7/0.9.9.8)
Purity won't let you pick Impatience, Purity, or Masochism, just as Impatience won't let you pick those, presumably for the same types of reasons. Which makes this post pretty short, relative to its peers.
All Angel of Purity runs of course labor under...
... that restriction.
Angel of 100
Effect: Completely removes all fixed floor generation cases, with the game ending upon completing your 100th floor.
I haven't tried this combination as yet, for the same basic reason I haven't tried Impatience+100: it sounds like it would tend to result in a higher rate of early deaths, and then its impact largely fall away as a run gets farther. In fact, it sounds even worse about this; Angel of Impatience taking away your ability to stockpile heals is a strategic difference no matter how far you get, whereas with Purity you just end up eating Medpacks where a 'plain' Angel of 100 run would eat Powerups. The only impact of any substance is the inability to exceed 100% HP. (Unless you're a Marine with Survivalist or Vampyre) Which is something, I guess, but... not much.
So yeah, not interested.
Angel of Light Travel
Effect: Doomguy has only 5 slots for carrying items, but he generates 20% more Energy per game tick.
Contrasting with Impatience+Light Travel, Purity+Light Travel is a very high-impact effect. A 'plain' Purity run can offset lack of Powerup healing by eating Medpacks and more pertinently by stockpiling them more heavily where possible, but Angel of Light Travel takes away the ability to stockpile Medpavks in any serious capacity. A 'plain' Angel of Light Travel normally relies a lot on Powerup healing by necessity, but Purity of course takes away that option in its entirety.
Overall, a very rough-sounding combo.
I really can't think of anything to say about this combo.
Angel of Red Alert
Effect: A nuke with a five minute timer is placed at Doomguy's feet upon entering each new floor. Scouts also don't get to passively know stair locations.
Just as I said with Impatience about Medpacks at times being skipped in Angel of Red Alert runs anyway, Powerups aren't necessarily worth the detour in Angel of Red Alert runs, so stacking Angel of Purity on isn't as clean a loss as you might assume.
Still making things harder, mind, just maybe not as much as you'd expect.
Angel of Darkness
Effect: Doomguy's base line of sight is reduced by 2 tiles (ie from 8 to 6), the game doesn't display tiles not currently in line of sight, and corpses Doomguy can't currently see have a chance to resurrect periodically. By extension, 'You feel relatively safe now' will never display. Scouts also don't get to passively know stair locations. Experience is gained twice as fast.
I don't really get why Impatience is blocked from Darkness while Purity is not blocked, especially given Darkness as your base absolutely can go on to pick Impatience.
In any event, Angel of Darkness shares with Angel of Red Alert that it's often not worth going back for Powerups, since enemy revival gets more aggressive the longer you linger on a floor. Unless you're obsessively destroying all corpses, I guess, but if you are then you are really not the target audience for these posts, so lie and pretend you don't play that way, okay? And also if you're that level of good at the game, you probably don't mind missing out on Purity's healing anyway...
But hey, I've not tried this combo! I don't like Angel of Darkness! So whatever, this is all speculation when it gets down to it!
I'm pretty sure entering Limbo/The Mortuary will basically always be suicide in this combo...
