Whenever I got it to spit out a Chaos damage Spell, it was accurate, with this being extremely clear with Flaming Arrow, but I was initially drawing up a whole thing with a case of it rolling Lightning before double-checking whether I was comparing Level 3 Book of Evil to Level 3 Lightning or not and realized I was comparing to Level 2 Lightning. Tested across all of The Legend, Armored Princess, and Warriors of the North (Well, Crossworlds and Ice and Fire) and aside stumbling on the Lightning point in The Legend testing I didn't get any such anomalies.

And whoops, removed Slow and Greasy Mist. I directly refer to it in Armored Princess, where it's actually significant.

Double-checked and corrected the info on Fear, Doom, Hell Breath, and Plague.

I'm not sure where I got the idea Sacrifice did Magic damage. It's been a few years and double-checking the spells.txt doesn't find such for me, either. It's possible it was bad forum info -I know a certain amount of stuff I couldn't figure out on my own I went off forum claims if they seemed accurate.

Argh, I really forgot to incorporate Eyeless? I probably need to update the later posts, too...

Throughout the series Book of Evil has been quite consistent about doing more damage than what the Spell would do if I cast it myself. As in, it casts Magic Axes, it does X damage, and then I open my Spellbook and see that X is somewhere above the damage I would do -and not just a little bit over.

Incorporating the Spell list, in any event.Ghoul Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15165232279081041131noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3656428975201272042.post-15223688830661518502022-06-16T09:32:00.865-07:002022-06-16T09:32:00.865-07:00Is it just me or it's not exactly obvious from...Is it just me or it's not exactly obvious from your post that spells' chances to apply Burn/Poison/Freeze scale with INT?
And it's +1% per point, if you need exact numbers.

You didn't mention that Hell Breath doesn't scale even through it has a multi-digit number. It seems it did at some point but not in the final game.

That not really important but just in case you are interested in how exactly Plague spreads - infected unit always applies it on melee attack. At the beginning of it's torn infected unit has 50% to infect any of surrounding units.

Fear's duration does not scales with INT, so leveling it is the only way to increase it's duration.

Doom's duration doesn't scale as well.

Um, where exactly did you saw Sacrifice being marked as having Magical damage? As far as I see, you usually mean spells.txt when you speak about info from the code, but it's clearly not the case.
Btw, it is indeed untyped in the Legend and AP and Astral in WotN and Darkside.

Necro Call is Necromancer's Call in the original. Maybe it's just sounds too long?

Books of Evil are also Eyeless.
Spell recharge on attack works only if the Book dealt atleast 10 damage.
Drain checks hp, not Leadership. The number is dependant on Book's level and is 200/400/600. Book can consume summoned creatures. Book's spells have the same level as the spell that summoned it but otherwise are the same as if cast by the hero. My tests confirm it. I don't know where did you get the impresstion that it have a big secret boost of some kind.
Here is the list of Book's spell, if you need one:
- level1 Book: Slow, Helplesness, Magic Greataxe, Flaming Arrow, Poison Skull
- level2 Book: Slow, Helplesness, Magic Greataxe, Poison Skull, Weakness, Oil... I mean Greasy Mist, Ghost Blade, Fear, Lightning, Doom, Pygmy
- level3 Book: Helplesness, Magic Greataxe, Poison Skull, Weakness, Ghost Blade, Fear, Lightning, Doom, Pygmy, Sheep, Blind, Hypnosis, Beholder's Sleep. Yeah, the last one is unexpected.Quaranyrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13563621496147736585noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3656428975201272042.post-10289373074432730712022-05-14T02:48:18.015-07:002022-05-14T02:48:18.015-07:00I think magic damage had no assotiated side effect...I think magic damage had no assotiated side effect. And interesting that the translation got the damage type wrong, not the original material. I've sometimes wondered how many of the inaccuracies or vague statements are on the translation in particular...

Wow, I'd been sure I'd confirmed Hell Breath working on Demons, but double-checking, yeah, it doesn't, not in The Legend, not in Armored Princess. I'll be updating descriptions appropriately... probably have some unit analysis bits also wrong...

Yeah, Random Spell doesn't vary its name in the English version. The Book of Evil has an Ability whose name is in line with the progression you lay out, but not the Talent itself.

Ooooh, Lightning being its own damage type at one point would explain some things, yeah. Shock being equivalent to Poison and Burn in terms of an elementally-associated side effect, for example. I wonder if Magic damage had a different associated side effect during development, or no standard side effect, just like Physical?

Overall that summary of Chaos sounds essentially exactly as it's used in the English-speaking world, particularly in the context of fantasy fiction. The only maybe-difference that comes to mind is that American fantasy fiction (I'm more or less entirely unfamiliar with what might be typical from Austrialian or United Kingdom fantasy fiction, let alone other places) often places Chaos as being opposed to lawfulness and general social mores -among other points, culturally-Christian creators often take this and combine it with an assumption that the natural laws are literal divine laws such that Chaos is a kind of elemental evil, what with being philosophically opposite of natural and divine law. (Which sometimes gets into territory akin to Necro Call being in the Chaos sphere here, where a spell is 'chaotic' because it 'violates the laws of nature')

(I can't believe I didn't notice Dark Side giving Chaos a bunch of randomness magic until you commented on it)Ghoul Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15165232279081041131noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3656428975201272042.post-32566486614340112822022-05-13T05:36:01.962-07:002022-05-13T05:36:01.962-07:00About Armageddon's reason for existance - at r...About Armageddon's reason for existance - at release it had fire damage, leading to people using Archdemons/Red dragons/Black Dragons armies and spamming Armageddon. Later patch changed it to astral.
Btw in Russian version description was changed to reflect that. And Kamikaze description is not misleading about whom you can target.

Some corrections:
Hell Breath CANNOT be applied to demons. It's rather illogical, considering it's name. Unless they are already too hellsih for it?:)
Weakness doesn't work on plants.

So, in English version Book's of Evil "random spell" ability have the same name regardless of level? In Russian it's "Normal spells"/"Powerful spells"/"Mighty spells".

In addition to ice damage, that was semi-cut but became a proper damage type later, there was another damage type planned - lightning. "Armor" abilities were supposed to make a unit weak to it in addition to providing resistance(s) like now. In fact, interaction between lightning attacks/spells and swordsmen was used as part of pre-release demonstration of how damage types work, so it's disappereance from the final game was somewhat unexpected. I guess devs just coudn't make it and magic damage relevant enough on their own and merged them. Alas, unlike ice it never got a second chance.
The only remnant of it in the final game is the Archmage Staff, which now specifically buffs Lightning spell and, well, archmages.

About meaning of word "Chaos" - in general Russian it means just means disorder of any kind, be it mess at your desk, an erratic/panicking mob or, say, a company where it's unclear who answer to whom. In mystic/fantasy context chaos assotiated with either destruction, unpredictability (usually in a "do X to help youself but how much it will help or will it help at all is out of your control" meaning), very unnatural twisting/distortion of something or demonic things.

So yeah, "Chaos magic" = "Magic of destruction/random/demons/unnatural stuff" for a Russian. Necro Call is here and not in Distortion because it's way more deep and unnatural change than just slow/haste/mind control. And as you can see all possible meaning exept for random are here. And than Darkside actually added spells with random effects.

I am actually interested how different is understanding of word "Chaos" among English-speaking people.
Quaranyrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13563621496147736585noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3656428975201272042.post-8049199533571309992018-09-15T17:39:33.952-07:002018-09-15T17:39:33.952-07:00Oh, that's actually a pretty good point, and a...Oh, that's actually a pretty good point, and also means you can be a bit more flexible in what to use. Archdemons or Necromancers, for example, since they both go really early in a turn and have useful qualities if you're going to do a one-unit-slot army.Ghoul Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15165232279081041131noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3656428975201272042.post-28321193899384832182018-09-15T08:07:34.566-07:002018-09-15T08:07:34.566-07:00"And yes, your mwahahaha abusive strategy of ..."And yes, your mwahahaha abusive strategy of fielding a stack of Black Dragons and nothing else while dropping Armageddons doesn't actually work in The Legend."
You can always use Glot's Armor on one stack of anything, then drop Armageddon.
